Transforming the lives of people and dogs

Want to become a
Volunteer Foster Trainer (VFT)?

The Hearing Dog Program in San Francisco
has new shelter dogs coming in for
training and could use your help!

What is a VFT?
A VFT helps house and train Hearing Dogs under the guidance of a Hearing Dog Program trainer. You provide a safe and loving home plus food, walks, playtime and socialization. We teach you how to train and care for the dog and cover vet costs.

How long does it take?
Training takes between 3 and 5 months. A trainer visits your home once a week to teach you how to train for sound alerts and obedience. These dogs are allowed to go into public places like restaurants and stores. After 3 to 5 months the dog is placed with a deaf or hard of hearing person.

What qualifications do I need?
If you love dogs and have some experience grooming, walking or training dogs, you may qualify to become a VFT. Contact us to set up an interview at your home.

How do I sign up?
